Poly Shipping Envelopes: A Key to Cutting Costs
02/13/2009
US-based computer maker Dell recently announced their plan to cut $8 million in costs over the next 4 years by reducing packaging expenses. The plan is also estimated to save some 150,000 trees, falling in line with Dell’s aim to reduce carbon emissions.
In today’s tough economic climate and with the current heightened concern for the environment, many companies are seeking to take similar measures. One positive step that can be taken is to implement poly shipping envelopes in place of paper envelopes or corrugated boxes.
Plastic shipping envelopes bring a variety of improvements over paper. Cost always being a prime concern, plastic items cost 1 to 2 cents as compared with 6 to 8 cents for paper. Another consideration is shipping weight—2,000 plastic items weigh 30 pounds, while the same quantity of paper weighs 280 pounds. Storage space is another comparison in favor of plastic; paper takes around 9 times the space that plastic occupies. And energy-wise, plastic again wins: plastic is 100 percent recyclable and requires 91% less energy to recycle than paper.
Because plastic weighs considerably less, it also saves companies substantially on shipping costs.
PolyPAK America, a leading provider of poly shipping envelopes, has designed shipping envelopes for a variety of items including soft goods, books, boxes, textiles, or just about any mail order item, and many companies are taking advantage. Made from a proprietary material called eNVIRO-TUFF™, these envelopes take up to one-third less space than paper utility envelopes and their weight is so insignificant that they don’t even register on a freight scale. This material makes for excellent impact strength and tear and water resistance. In addition to stock items, these envelopes are also available in custom sizes and colors.
Today, cutting operating costs is of prime importance. Making the switch from paper to plastic shipping envelopes is an excellent start.
